We were looking for a place to go for the weekend, not too far, but nice and different, something in the country.
That’s how we discovered Avallon and the Morvan area and only 2 hours on the motorway from Paris.
We had no idea it was so beautiful.
A modern town surrounded by impressive stone ramparts, from where you can admire a colourful view: fields, flowers and vines.
You can’t miss the “Cousin”, a river you’ll find on your way everywhere on the valley that you go, it’s always there, with you.
We visited Vézelay and its basilique “Sainte-Marie-Madeleine de Vézelay”, which gets one million visitors every year!
It can be reached at the end of a street full of artist boutiques, where you can find hand made crafts, old photographs, paintings, sculptures and regional products.
We visited the Castle of Chastellux, flanked by its eight towers, dominating the valley of the Cure; the village of Saint Père and its Gothic church, as well as the archaeological site of “Fontaines Salées” (Salted Fountains); Carré les Tombes, which houses one hundred stone sarcophagi.
“La maison Vauban” is not far away; a museum dedicated to Vauban, the military engineer and his genius with the building of  military fortification in many towns and cities in France.
Other interesting towns to visit are, Sémur en Auxois , Pierre Qui Vire, Montréal (yes, it’s not really in Canada).
Un unforgettable cruise on the lake of Settons, a man-made lake, built between 1854 to 1861 and a dam intended to control navigation on the Yonne river.
Today the lake is used as a leisure base, in particular for fishing and water sports such as rafting, kayak, catamaran, windsurfing and water skiing.
If you live in or around Paris, Morvan is a great place for a day or a weekend getaway – you should try this relatively unknown and beautiful part of France – only a stone’s throw away from the capital.
